Balancing 12-hour night shifts with a consistent workout routine has begun to take a noticeable toll on my body. In search of ways to relax and recover more effectively, I discovered the “Total Body Enhancement” machine offered at Planet Fitness available exclusively to Black Card members. This device combines red light therapy with whole-body vibration, and Planet Fitness recommends using it at least three times per week in 12-minute sessions.

What to Expect from the Machine

The Total Body Enhancement unit resembles a stand-up tanning booth, but instead of UV rays, it emits therapeutic red light. For comfort, cleanliness and modesty, I typically wear socks and underwear during sessions. The machine includes hand straps above your head to hold to help expose areas like the underarms to the light, minimizing shadowing and maximizing coverage.

One of the most appealing aspects is the warmth of the red light: it’s deeply relaxing, similar to a tanning bed but without the harmful radiation. A control panel allows users to adjust the fan speed; I personally prefer the fan off unless I’m particularly sweaty. The vibration plate offers three preset programs, each with adjustable intensity. I rotate through the programs with each session, and I find the combination of heat and vibration to be especially soothing.

Integrating It Into My Routine

Whether used before or after a workout, the Total Body Enhancement machine serves as a great complement to any fitness regimen. I prefer to use it at the end of my gym session, following a stretch and an Apple Fitness “Mindful Cooldown.” While I still enjoy the massage chairs and hydro-beds at Planet Fitness and the sauna and hot tub at National Fitness Center; this machine adds a unique benefit thanks to its warmth and recovery-focused features. If you don’t mind standing for 12 extra minutes, it’s well worth the time.

Why Red Light Therapy?

Unlike blue light therapy, which has been used in some countries to stimulate alertness in night shift workers (often through light boxes), red light therapy is believed to support the body’s natural rhythms. Blue light can interfere with melatonin production and disrupt sleep cycles, while red light does not appear to have this effect.

Reported benefits of red light therapy include:

  • Enhanced collagen and elastin production, improving skin elasticity
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved blood flow near the skin’s surface
  • Better nutrient delivery
  • Accelerated muscle recovery and pain relief

These effects typically become noticeable after consistent use: three sessions per week for at least two months. Personally, I’ve begun to experience improved recovery and reduced soreness, and I’m committed to continuing this routine to explore the full range of benefits.

Are you currently using red light therapy? I’d love to hear about your experience. Feel free to share your results or tips in the comments below.
